    Nice to hear your thoughts on 1250 vs 1300. I myself changed from 1250GSA HP -19 to a 1250 GSA Rally like yours. It started when I saw the launch of the 1300 GSA and thought that it must probably mature for a while in my mind. The 1300 GS has, so I went to my dealer and test drove one. But I wasn't particularly impressed, certainly the engine and gearbox were a bit better, auto leveling was nice. But I didn't get a feel for it, so I went home on a 1250 GSA Rally :-) In Sweden, there is no price dumping of 1250 GSAs, but you get a 3-year service agreement, a BMW ConnectedRide Navigator and BMW pannier set with the purchase. And like you, I have a lot of equipment that I move over, Touratech suspension, Altrider bashplate and so on.

    I think you need to give Heather some serious credit. 🥇 It sounds like she did a lot regarding lodging and tour guide fun. My wife is my personal travel agent. “Honey, I’ll make it another 100 miles today” She gets me reservations and so much more. It’s such a stress reliever and saves me valuable ride time to have her scope out things for me. I love it. 👍

      Sorry it took me a couple of days to reply. Heather was my concierge and tour-guide and travel-agent. She was spotting me for weather, gas, hotels. We used the unlimited InReach messaging religiously and of course, her at home 4500 miles away raising a 6 month old baby all alone while I traveled. In 2 weeks, I'm taking the family to Europe so we're going to still get some travel time this Summer.

    I did much the same trip starting from SW Indiana in 2016. I was 65 at the time and did it on a Goldwing. Spent the Summer Solstice at the Arctic Circle and that was unique. The bottom line for me from that trip though was this lesson. "Life is not all about self". I never got lonely, but seeing and experiencing it all by one's self just kept reminding me that it would have been better with the love of my life. To each his own.

      Good point. I would have probably gone further if I wasn’t alone. I also wouldn’t have done as many miles or this pace if I wasn’t alone. 11,500 miles in 24 days was pretty extreme for most. One point, I did four 600 mile days in a row then 2 days home, I did 1800 miles.

    I am familiar with you from your postings on ADVRider. Great photos. I hear a lot of 40-year-old male corporate employee angst/perspective in your dialogue. I turn 60 in a couple months. There's a time in life that is conducive to solo motorcycle travel... and there is a time that is not. That's what you encountered during your trip. Personally, I worry about those twenty-somethings. Instant gratification is a poor foundation for life. I tour three to five weeks a year which sufficiently balances out the rest of my life. I've never had a desire to be a full-time motorcycle vagabond - I just enjoy riding and seeing America. It's not always roses out on the road. The most important part of every tour is pulling into the driveway at home at the end with me and the bike safely intact. Nothing is worth jeopardizing the next ride. It's not how far you ride. It's not how many days you're gone. It's what you discover.

    Awesome pictures! I have a ‘21 GS with Givi 37L panniers, last year did 2 weeks out from Florida to Buffalo area and found them really heavy loaded, actually stopped and mailed 15lbs home midway. This year same trip in September but going to try just a 30L tailbag and tank bag. Did you find those panniers too heavy and any changes you would make on your next tour?

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86 3 дня назад

      That’s a great ride. All interstate or back-roads? My trips now, I just do 2 panniers on the side and they usually aren’t full. This trip, I carried way more tech since I wanted to publish a video every day and that means an entire pannier full and I bought a larger tent and cot so I had to get a 40L duffel in place of a top case. Was it too much? I only could think of 10L of things I really never used but would have been glad to have if I needed them. The panniers ARE heavy around 40-50 pounds each fully loaded up. I know this because I had to carry them up 4 flights of stairs at a cheap hotel in Whitehorse and it sucked! But I honestly wouldn’t want to cut back because saving weight would have meant not having these photos or videos to share.

    • @_Corsa
      @_Corsa 3 дня назад

      @@AdamChandler86 Yes cutting straight up through Appalachia rarely disappoints, it will be a mix of interstate and back roads. I appreciate all your hard work with film, pictures, editing and gear. I'm 47 and do two trips a year, late spring was Colorado, this September is North Fort Myers to Batavia NY air show. Experimenting a little this run ditching the panniers, only running a 30L tailbag and a Mosko hood tank bag for the Canon camera. Motels and a hammock/rainfly with an honest attempt to eat better this time.

      It's funny because (and maybe this is just media / romanticism) but if you watch movies / documentaries / read old magazines, it seemed like all of the people traveling the world on motorcycles or in beat up cars were doing it in their younger ages. Now it seems like culturally, the developed world places so much emphasis on productivity / self-worth through work and starting careers that you go right from school to work and don't skip a beat so young people just aren't encouraged to explore and grow and instead be productive and start saving up for a home or retirement. Maybe we should switch that around?

  • @chrisd4283

    You hit on the best part here. Being free and only having to worry about yourself. I'm glad I went solo. It pushed me in many ways. At 62 I had a torn rotator cuff and torn meniscus, but I went anyways. I had great friends who followed my daily Instagrams and gave me a return celebration when I rolled up home. I've been doing 12 days trips annually for the last 13 years with a good buddy who I mesh well with. I'm OK with solo but in the early years it was hard to talk to strangers. Now I relish in it. You've got a newborn and that's a whole new dynamic. But you're young and still have plenty of time to do the bucket list items.

      I'm glad that resonated with someone out there. It sort of makes me want to make these trips a minimum 2 weeks from now on just so I get to have that feeling again that truly takes 2 weeks to feel. I always thought a 1 week vacation was when you get it but 2 weeks was the sweet spot to start feeling free.

    Enjoyed your videos. My buddy and I just completed a 24 day trip to Alaska. As we have HD touring bikes we could only do paved roads.....Fairbanks, Anchorage, Seward, Valdez & Tok. Thinking about a GS as it would be lighter than my bike and offers more versatility. How was your bike making a trip like this? By the way we both just turned 75 and have been riding almost 60 years. Would love to do another one. Ride safe!!!!!

    • @AdamChandler86

      Any bike is better than nothing. I owned a BMW R18 full-dresser for a few years and LOVED that thing. it was a different feeling when on the open-road than a GS. You could still push it through any corner but it took a little more work. The steering angle, weight, height and center of gravity of a GS is almost like it drives itself with plenty of power whenever you want it and the suspension is a dream. It's tuned for off road which means it soaks up every bump in the road. I ended up selling the cruiser because it was just wasted on me as I kept going back to the GS.

    Great recap especially re more of the personal and mental stuff vs sights etc. Thank you for mixing it up. This is the missing piece I’ve been wondering about before I take my 1st trip. Interested to hear more about the loneliness factor? Were there various times when you just wanted to head back home vs onward ? Thanks for the personal insights.

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86 3 дня назад

      We’re all different. I personally was an only child for my first 11 years and have for the longest time been the kind of person who goes to movies alone (still do) and likes camping alone. I once did 40 days at my house (when I had a small farm) and never left when I had a remote job. I think I went into town once a month for 6 months but was all alone. So I probably handled this trip’s loneliness differently than most others. If you’re like me, then the talking to a stranger in a cafe or people watching every few days is enough to be recharged. I started sitting with people at breakfast and starting conversations. That satisfied my needs. ---- I think versus wanting to head back versus keep going, there were only moments where I needed to make progress. “I gotta get the heck out of the Yukon” I said a few times or “the heck out of Montana” some places were great but if I lingered too long, I’d put the whole journey at risk. So my issue was days where I wasn’t making progress and feeling anxious about the impact on the overall journey.

Health is iffy as i quit riding after back surgery that failed was unable to walk or ride for a few years. Last year did my first 5 day 2500 trip . I am amazed how strong i was compared to now. Went down on my gs and lifted it. Few yrs ago i could not and needed help.

      That’s beautiful. And maybe it’s a weird thing to say, but I’m proud of you. We are always pushed in modern life to provide for our friends and family, but it’s often not talked about which is providing for ourselves and achieving things that are hard or really difficult and require, ultimate self reliance and even if you never take that 4 week, vacation, even the little ones are worth cherishing. Wright safe and here’s to your next adventure.

    Great video Adam, I know how you feel. Rode to the Dempster from Ontario in 2021. Made it to the Arctic Circle on my way to Tuk but about of Covid in Inuvik shut the town. It was raining and incredibly messy ride. Only had 24 days to complete the trip. I went back last year and made it to Tuk. Weather was good only 2 days of bad weather on the Dempster but made it. That trip was 27 days. I truly hope you make it back up there and complete your adventure. I find i keep getting drawn back there as its such a magical place. Safe travels !!!

    Dude, you got off cheap on lodging, lol. For my Alaska trip of 23 days and 9K miles I averaged $278 a day. Lodging was $3400, Fuel $1100, Food $1000 and misc. $900 for a total of $6400. No regrets at all and I was sleeping in comfort without the fear of being eaten by bears or mosquitos.

      That’s good to know and yeah, I did more hotels than I should have. I really wanted to do free camping and then pay $100 a night for a cheap motel every 5th night for a total of $500 total for lodging. I went way over that figure but those nights in a real bed and a hot shower were amazing.

    I’ve got a 2018 GSA, and live in alaska. Journeys to McCarthy, Denali, brooks range, and Dawson are pretty common. I average 42.8 mpg (5.5l / 100km), and minimize expense by free camping (but have more local experience doing so). Also keep in mind that you are going to pay for food back home too; perhaps not as much, but food isn’t free anywhere.

    Hi, there, You still made a comfortable trip. Sleeping and eating well is important on a motorcycle, as we're exposed to the elements, which has an impact on our physical condition. When I go on a trip on my GS, I plan a bigger budget, especially if my wife accompanies me. When I was 20, I traveled on a fairly limited budget and was happy, but now that I'm older, I need more comfort to enjoy my roadtrip. Next year we're thinking of going to the USA for 22 days, with a budget of around $400 usd per day. Greetings from Quebec Canada.

    Started watching when you were in the Yukon, really enjoyed your videos. One point - if you are tracking the incremental cost of the trip - you could subtract what you would normally spend for food at home. This may apply to some other categories also ( gas for instance). This is the approach I take and takes some of the pain away. 😀

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86 4 дня назад

      Yup, very fair. In fact usually I spend more on food so that’s an easy subtraction. Also, most people don’t use this much gas in a month.

    Question. My dealer say this job takes hours. Due to draining and they say it takes a lot more oil. What gives?

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86 6 дней назад

      Your owners manual says what the oil capacities are. Are they saying the ValvoMax drain plug requires more oil be added? I definitely contest that. As for time it takes, sure it takes a bit more time to thread on the drain hose but then it drains just as fast. It took me a few changes to get fast at it but it’s not so bad. I’m not running a shop so it sounds to me like they just don’t want to do it. Sometimes, when a place quotes an outrageous figure, it just means they want you to go somewhere else. If you aren’t doing your own changes, you probably should just keep it stock so you don’t have issues with places that don’t like custom things.
